Little Beirut gives the RNC Convention the cold shoulder

The city once dubbed Little Beirut by George Herbert Walker Bush is giving the Republicans a well deserved snub.

Portland's mayor Tom Party is telling the GOP that the city will will take a pass on their invitation to host the 2008 Republican National Convention.

Potter says that Portland doesn't have the necessary hotel room space or convention space, even with the expansions at the Convention Center. Plus the cost to fumigate the city once the RNC cockroaches take their leave would be prohibitive.

I say we open up Dignity Village in the parking structure at the Convention Center and let the Republican delegates pitch tents alongside the homeless. The city could charge $150 for tent space and access to toilets inside--which will stop working halfway through the Convention in Katrina aftermath style. Let the GOP see what their leadership is really all about.

This really is dissapointing. I was looking forward to seeing the city take lots of Republican money into its coffers to run its liberal programs. Imagine the entertainment value in all the protests. Hell..Portland didn't get that "Little Beirut" label for nothing. Few cities know how to throw a proper protest better than Portland.

The shitstorm from the protesting alone would keep Portland on the front edge of the news cycle for at least a week. That's better advertising to talk people out of moving to Oregon than anything Tom McCall could have dreamed up.

Ah well...maybe 2012.
